- Family Tree Maker
(FTM)
- The genealogy software I currently use. Chosen after trying
a number of competing products! Even if you don't own the program,
there is a lot of good material on this site for you - genealogy
training, searching for others, etc.
- The
Family Tree Maker Wish List
- Things FTM won't do that you wish it would! Maybe in the
next upgrade?
- The Master Genealogist
(TMG) from Wholly Genes Software
- More powerful than Family Tree Maker but not as polished.
Doesn't support long file names. I'm considering switching to
this package but I'm really torn. It's tag system lets one record
a date/note for just about anything and see them all in a timeline
order. Great for seeing a person's life history at a glance.
It has much better source handling than FTM also. On the other
hand, the new version 3.5 isn't fully released yet and I still
haven't been able to get it to print anything. It's lack of Win95
support is also a major negative for me. The jury is still out
on this one but if you're just starting, give it a look!
